So you’ve just moved into your brand new place, congratulations! Perhaps you’ve upsized from an apartment to a house, relocated somewhere larger for some extra space, or it’s simply a case of moving into your very own place for the first time.
Moving can be an expensive business, but the prospect of furnishing and decorating needn’t be. Here are some top tips for decorating your brand new abode without breaking the bank.
Antique fairs & charity shops – this may be seen by some to be a little bit old school but some of the best bargains for homewares are to be found at your local antique fairs and charity shops. Most charities have dedicated furniture and homeware outlets in which you can pick up some of your much-needed larger items for a great price, whilst also giving your money to a worthy cause.
Auction sites – online auction sites, such as eBay, are fantastic for both second hand and brand new homewares at incredibly affordable prices. Plus, as an extra little tip: if you refine your search by ‘local collection only’ you can even avoid those high postage fees for bigger items!
DIY – if there’s something specific you’d really love for your new place, but you just haven’t been able to find it anywhere, then DIY is an excellent option. It’s a great opportunity to use those crafting skills on your new and second-hand finds. With a little imagination old crates become bedside tables, vintage suitcases are transformed into a chest of draws, and if you need some contemporary planters… paint up some breezeblocks! The options are endless, but if you need a little inspiration there are some great tutorials to be found online.
The little things – whilst a lot of these tips concern the larger items needed for your new home, those little finishing touches are important too. Etsy is a goldmine for art prints; with the added bonus that you know the cost is going directly to the artist. There are also great value monthly subscription services for ornamental treasures, knick-knacks and even fresh flowers, which are a brilliant way to add that personal touch to your décor without spending a fortune.
Check Facebook groups – remember Freecycle? Well, that excellent community seems to have moved over into the world of Facebook groups very successfully in recent years. Search for local buy, swap and sell pages and ‘free-cycling’ groups on Facebook for all kinds of superb homewares and furniture.
These tips should help you get a great start on making your new place feel like home. With a little bit of creative thinking, you really can successfully decorate your new home on any budget.
